Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Brian Lynch created a decided stir in 2011 with the release of his Unsung Heroes project. Both an affirmation of his tradition-drenched roots in modern Black American Music (A Jazz Messenger, Brian was also a long time member of Horace Silver’s Quintet as a young man and “paid his dues” with myriad figures of the real jazz tradition including Charles McPherson, Benny Golson, the Phil Woods Quintet, etc.) and a bold statement of artistic self-determination (Unsung Heroes was the maiden voyage of Brian’s label Hollistic MusicWorks, dedicated to independence of the artist and integrity of the music expressed by 21st century means), Unsung Heroes received attention and acclaim far past what is usually expected from what Brian himself described as a “…collection of unpretentious and straight ahead music”, including a 5 star review in Downbeat Magazine. This is an indication of the rare excellence of the Unsung Heroes project, in its fresh conception and in its brilliant and swinging execution by the Unsung Heroes band (Lynch, alto sax master Vincent Herring, tenor saxophonist Alex Hoffman, the brilliant pianist Rob Schneiderman, bassist David Wong, and drummer Pete Van Nostrand). Now, on November 12, 2013, the second volume of Unsung Heroes is at last available on CD.


The elements that make Unsung Heroes stand out among the many superficially similar “straight-ahead jazz” releases of the past few years are numerous and sharply marked. First, the concept: far from being a rote “celebration” of the obvious jazz icons, Unsung Heroes plumbs the rich depth of the music in exploring the work of such underappreciated masters as (on the second volume) trumpeters Tommy Turrentine, Idrees Sulieman, and Joe Gordon. Having access to unrecorded scores (courtesy of publisher and project supporter Don Sickler of and other primary sources of these artists created the possibility of recording new and unheard music for these sessions, in contrast to either a rote recitation of a previously recorded version or a “reimagining” remote from the composer’s intention. And most of all, the fresh, unforced quality of the performances throughout sets Unsung Heroes apart from those present day releases that all too often exhibit the “anxiety of influence”, either by the slavish obedience to it or the headlong flight from it. The musicians of Unsung Heroes are secure in their ability to make swinging, straight-ahead music without cliche, and Unsung Heroes Vol. 2 is further confirmation of that fact. The Unsung Heroes project is an affirmation of the continuing relevance of the form when it’s done right!

Hollistic MusicWorks, in collaboration with Brian Lynch and Emmet Cohen, is happy to announce that the Kickstarter campaign in support of their upcoming recording Brian Lynch and Emmet Cohen – Quartet and Duo is now live!

Kickstarter is the pioneering crowd funding platform that has become the support vehicle for creative artists ranging from Spike Lee to your local creator down the street. Kickstarter and Hollistic MusicWorks are no strangers to each other, with Brian Lynch’s Unsung Heroes recording project being supported by funding from a successful Kickstarter project in 2010.

With Kickstarter all funding Is dependent on the overall fund raising goal being reached, and in a limited amount of time; in this case the deadline is September 12, which happens to be Brian’s birthday!

The collaboration between Grammy© Award winning trumpeter Lynch and new star on the modern jazz horizon Cohen is shaping up to be one of the must have discs for 2013-2014. Joined by legendary drummer Billy Hart and master bassist Boris Kozlov, Lynch and Cohen present a quartet program of originals bridging traditional and contemporary sounds with virtuosity, passion and swinging aplomb. As a duo, they essay and recast jazz classics and standards with warmth, intelligence and lack of cliche.

Funding proceeds from successfully reaching the Kickstarter goal will go towards completing the production of the recording (mixing, mastering, and manufacturing), as well as publicity, promotion and other support for the CD and digital releases. In their forthcoming Hollistic MusicWorks release, the collaboration between principals Lynch and Cohen results in a seamless, multi-generational blend of sensibility expressed through virtuoso playing and evocative writing. Pianist Emmet Cohen – 2012 finalist in the Thelonious Monk Competition and now rapidly making his name on the NYC jazz scene – first came to Brian Lynch’s attention when he heard his trio on the 2011 Jazz Cruise. Subsequently their paths were to cross in the academic arena when Lynch assumed his position as Professor of Jazz and Studio Music at the Frost School Of Music – University Of Miami in Fall 2011, where Cohen was finishing up his undergraduate degree. Cohen’s decision to seek Lynch’s mentoring as part of his curriculum, not to mention the natural affinity the two had for each other’s musical approach, resulted in significant playing and performing time together, and now a full scale recording project that offers compelling evidence of the rapport between these two gifted musicians both in quartet (Boris Kozlov on bass and the great Jabali Billy Hart on drums) and duo formats.

One firmly established as an modern master and the other rapidly becoming a new force to be reckoned with on the scene, together Brian Lynch and Emmet Cohen are making a significant contribution to the cause of contemporary and swinging music today! Trumpeter and Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch brings to his music an unparalleled depth and breadth of experience. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has received wide acclaim during his long tenures with Latin Jazz legend Eddie Palmieri and straight ahead master Phil Woods. He has also been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music.  Emmet Cohen

At 22, jazz piano prodigy Emmet Cohen plays with the maturity and confidence of a seasoned veteran. With astonishing technique and an innovative harmonic palate, Emmet engenders a deep musical bond with his audience. He has shared the bandstand with a plethora of Jazz luminaries, including Christian McBride, Joshua Redman, Patti Austin, Maceo Parker, Carmen Bradford, Billy Hart, and many others. After pursuing a music degree at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, where he studied with esteemed pianists Shelly Berg and Martin Bejerano, he is currently finishing his Masters studies at the Manhattan School Of Music.

Emmet has been playing piano since he started Suzuki lessons in his native Miami at age 3. He continued studying classical music at a youth keyboard program at the University of Miami, and upon moving to Montclair, NJ at age 10, was accepted into the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, where he majored for seven years in classical piano in the studio of Dr. Peter Vinograde. His interest in jazz gradually intensified over these years, and he was fortunate to be exposed to and mentored by some of the great jazz musicians in the New York metropolitan area such as Bruce Williams, Cecil Brooks III, Dave Stryker, Billy Hart, and Jeremy Manasia.

Since then he has played and performed at some of the top jazz clubs and festivals around the world, including the Monterey Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival (Holland), Bern (Switzerland) Jazz Festival, and River to River Festival (NYC). In September of 2011 Emmet won third prize in the Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition. Backed by Carl Allen and Rodney Whitaker, he performed a set at the Kennedy Center in front of 2,000 people. Since his move to New York City in 2012, he has made rapid inroads into the NYC jazz scene, leading groups at venues like Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola (Jazz At Lincoln Center) and Smoke, and performing at the NYC Blue Note as a member of the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band.

Emmet’s debut album, “In the Element” featuring Joe Sanders and Rodney Green, has received many positive reviews. Emmet is also an accomplished Hammond B3 organ player, and performs regularly in the NY/NJ and Miami areas, as both a leader and a sideman.

News – End Of Summer 2012

Yeah, it’s been a long time indeed since I’ve dropped a newsletter! Since I’ve been getting inquiries whether my mailing list is still intact, I thought I’d better get busy and pull some things together to recount. Guess I’ve been so busy doing that it’s hard to tell about it. That’s where I’m a little “old school” – we older cats grew up in an era where social networking meant “after hours”, not Facebook.

Anyhow, here’s my “new school”, “all about me” report. There might be a thing or two of interest to you….

SUMMER MADNESS – when will it end?

Even as the new school year is starting up for me at the University Of Miami Frost School, my summer touring still has not ended. I’m writing while enroute to Johannesburg, South Africa for 2 performances at the Johannesburg Jazz Festival with Eddie Palmieri. This is the capper to a busy and exciting summer with Eddie, taking part in his 75th Birthday tour. Highlights were playing for a crowd of over 50,000 at the Parque de Salsa festival in Bogota, Colombia (Aug. 17);

a memorable concert at the Marciac Jazz Festival in France (Aug. 9)

and a number of double bills of Eddie’s salsa orchestra with the wonderful Ruben Blades, including at the Hollywood Bowl(Aug. 15).

Phil Woods and the Quintet were active this summer too, with a Japanese tour and a week in NYC at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in July.

My own gigs included a magical performance at NYC’s Rubin Museum as part of their Harlem in the Himalayas series (Aug. 3).

Still to come are two concerts in Boston and Detroit with my “Unsung Heroes” project. Since they’re still coming up (but quick) , maybe some of you out there can stop by!

MADERA LATINO -Woody Shaw en Clave!

In the middle of all this touring and playing, I managed to pull off a pretty cool recording project for my Hollistic MusicWorks label. Some of you may remember a couple of years ago the “Madera Latino” (Latin Wood) concert I did for the Festival Of New Trumpet Music celebration of Woody Shaw. I decided for this summer’s record date to revise and expand that music, write a couple of original pieces dedicated to Woody, and invite some of my favorite trumpet players to play these Latin-jazz imaginings of the great master’s music with astounding rhythm section players and percussionists . It was a blast!  Here’s a few shots from the sessions showing this killer cast:

2011 Roundup (briefly)

Hi All,

2011 is history, or more poetically, gently receding into the mists of memory. Before it becomes too misty, perhaps I could relate a light recap of what was a most eventful year. There was a lot of change, some of it both unexpected and most welcome.

The biggest change involved a expansion of scenery. Out of nowhere (at least to me), the opportunity presented itself for me to accept a professorship at the Frost School Of Music, University Of Miami. Now, y’all, let’s get this straight right off the bat; I can’t do without New York, won’t do without it, ain’t leaving it. But after I went down to Miami and saw what they’re doing at the Frost School, I knew I had to figure out a way to be a part of it. So now I’m in residence both in NY and Miami; Hollistic MusicWorks now has a Miami branch.

I love my new teaching gig! There’s a great culture in the Frost School as a whole and in the jazz and studio music department (that’s where I’m working out of, natch). There are great students and inspired teachers aplenty; I’ve learned much already from them. The scene is livened up by the “cats” (like Terence Blanchard, Dave Douglas, and Dave Holland) coming in for residencies and extended stays. And the weather ain’t bad right around now….

You’ll still see me on the scene in “town” and out on the road. But I’m happy to be settling in to a new phase and new place as far as the teaching part of my career is concerned, in one of the best music schools on the planet.

unsung DB reviewThe reception of my Unsung Heroes recording project during this past year was very gratifying to me after all the work I put into it. Five stars (very rare for a “straight-ahead” recording!) and a Best CD of 2011 designation in Downbeat, one of the Best 50 Jazz CDs of 2011 in Jazz Times, #3 on the JazzWeek chart and lots of other kudos. It feels good when your DIY job goes so far! I had another CD release in 2010, ConClave Vol. 2 on CrissCross, the same label I recorded my first album on 25 years ago last week. ConClave V2, featuring my Spheres Of Influence band, had a bit of success also; in particular being named one of the best Latin Jazz CDs of 2011 by WBGO and enjoying many glowing reviews.

Downbeat also conferred kudos to me this past year through the agency of their International Critics Poll, which placed me 3rd in the Trumpet category. Nice to get some recognition, even as I remind myself of accaim’s fleeting nature and its often tenuous connection to real artistry….There were many great experiences and good times playing in 2011, both with my own projects and with my musical families like Eddie Palmieri, Phil Woods, the Curtis Brothers and others! I’m looking forward to an even more fruitful and musically venturesome 2012, as I turn even more to following my own musical imperatives to their logical (or illogical) nexus.

Another thing I hope to put into action in this coming year is an expanded presence on my blog, not so much tooting my own horn as sharing thoughts about music and especially celebrating the musicians that mean something to me, whether an influence, favorite, or colleague (they can be all of the above too, and usually are!). I hope to start putting things of interest up soon.

I have some good gigs coming up soon, so keep looking at my calendar. One of special note, the Frost School of Music’s Concert Jazz Band is playing a complete concert of my big band music with myself as special guest this coming Thursday, February 2nd at 7:30 PM. I’ve been working with the band along with my esteemed colleague, CJB director Dante Luciani (who also is a wonderful be bopping trombonist) and the music is going to be happening.
